The System Modeling and Estimation Group within the Force Projection Sector of the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking an enthusiastic physicist and/or engineer to take on the position of Strategic Deterrent Nuclear Survivability Researcher. The ideal candidate will work on complex, multi-discipline problems with a team of experts to offer technical contributions to improve the next generation of U.S. Strategic Systems.

 

As a Strategic Deterrent Nuclear Survivability Researcher You Will…

  • Work with a talented and inclusive multi-disciplinary team to analyze the nuclear survivability of strategic weapons systems.
  • Perform technical analyses to understand, evaluate, and characterize system response to nuclear or other events
  • Use in-house or third-party software/physics/modeling codes to perform rigorous technical analyses
  • Determine what data and information is needed to perform credible analysis, and perform that analysis to determine system level effects.
  • Perform technical analyses of work produced by external partners
  • Support system-level modeling and simulation.
  • Interact with sponsors and representatives of other organizations.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Master of Science in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related science/engineering field with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Are familiar with radiation environments and the principles of radiation interactions with matter.
  • Are familiar with MATLAB and/or other coding platforms.
  • Have knowledge of data analysis, computational physics, or computational engineering.
  • Have a strong mathematical and statistical background.
  • Attention to detail with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The qualifications needed in this job also include initiative, interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

 

You'll exceed our minimum requirements with experience in any of the following...

  • Have a Doctorate in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related science/engineering field with 5+ years of experience strategic deterrence domain area or flight systems analysis.
  • Have High Energy Particle Physics, Thermal Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Weapon Effects, or Plasma Physics knowledge.
  • Have Nuclear Weapons effects modeling and simulation experience
  • Have applied radiation testing methods and used radiation testing facilities.
  • Have experience with radiation effects on materials and electronic parts for strategic systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to present to high level government sponsors.
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance.
