Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Social Science

Job Description

The Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC) and the Data Science Initiative (DSI) at Brown University invite applications for two year Postdoctoral Research Associates to start on or around July 1, 2023. The initial term of appointment is one year, but reappointment for a second year is expected, subject to good performance. Researchers in this new Computational Social Science Postdoctoral initiative will have a joint appointment among PSTC, DSI and a home social science department. We seek candidates who fit the intellectual missions of PSTC and DSI and who work in any area of demography and data science. Postdoctoral Research Associates are expected to spend the majority of their time on research. They will teach one computational social science course per year (flexible level and topic) in their disciplinary department.

The PSTC builds scientific understanding of local, national, and global population challenges and their implications for health and well-being. Research at the PSTC is distinguished by its commitment to collaboration across disciplinary and institutional boundaries as well as its strong portfolio of global research. PSTC focuses on demographic research in six main areas: children, families, and health; migration and urbanization; population, development, and environment; reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; social foundations of health disparities, and social inequalities. Brown's Data Science Initiative (DSI) is a growing, transdisciplinary, collaborative unit, supporting research and education in data science across Brown's campus. DSI facilitates and conducts both domain-driven and fundamental research in data science, educates the next generation of data scientists, and explores the impact of the data revolution on culture, society, and social justice.

Postdoctoral Research Associates are expected to spend their time working independently and collaboratively with one or more mentors. In addition, Postdoctoral Research Associates are expected to coordinate or participate in relevant working groups, regularly attend the weekly PSTC and DSI Colloquia and other workshops and mentoring activities, present their work to the community and profession, and submit papers for publication. We request that applicants visit the PSTC and DSI faculty affiliate pages and identify one or two potential faculty mentors; however, applicants do not need to contact potential mentors prior to submitting an application. We also welcome applicants with financial support from other sources, including the NIH F32 Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are integral to the commitment of the Population Studies and Training Center and Brown University. Accordingly, PSTC seeks qualified candidates who can contribute to racial equity, diversity and inclusion in their scholarship and professional activities. Further, the PSTC is keenly interested in diversifying higher education and encourages applications from historically underrepresented groups in higher education.
