Position Description
Scientists in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at Harvard conduct break-through research using the most advanced methods and instrumentation in single-cell sequencing, nanofabrication, neuroimaging, transcriptomics, and astrophysics. FAS Informatics provides a critical interface between this cutting-edge science and modern technology infrastructure like parallel compute systems, petabyte-scale distributed storage, deep-learning tools, and services hosted in FAS Research Computing's massive compute infrastructure.
Join the FAS Informatics Software Operations team as a research applications developer and you will:
- Work with scientists, facility administrators, and financial staff to gather application requirements and troubleshoot process and software issues in support of a variety of internal efforts like the Center for Nanoscale Systems NNIN project and the Bauer Sequencing Core's 10X sequencing.
- Contribute to the development of new cloud-based web applications supporting instrument core facilities.
- Participate in the ongoing improvement of the software development environment, including development of CI / CD pipelines and test code.
- Work closely with other members of the FAS Bioinformatics and Research Computing teams to enable high-throughput data analysis for faculty research.
- Contribute to end user documentation and training.

Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- A bachelor's degree in computer science or related field preferred.
- Experience with Python command line and web application development (e.g. (Django / Flask, MySQL, and Javascript)) in a Linux environment is needed.
- Previous experience in building web-based systems in a laboratory or research environment is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with solutions and VueJS / Vuetify is ideal.
- Must be customer oriented, have strong communication skills - both verbal and written; especially with respect to relaying complex computation information to others.
- Ability to interact well with a broad constituency including students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and research staff.
Certificates and Licenses
- Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in an office setting.
- This is a full-time position with flexible hours and remote work options to be agreed upon at hire.
- This position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA, with the possibility of having a hybrid in-person/remote schedule. The selected candidate will need to be on campus as business needs require. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, VT, VA, and WA).
