POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
About the Opportunity
We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate to support research focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel 2-dimensional polymers in Northeastern University’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Boston Campus. The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
- Design, synthesize, and purify hexafunctional monomers
- Design, polymerize, and characterize novel two-dimensional polymers, e.g., graphimine, graphamid, and related structures, for high performance applications
- Develop strong working relationships with U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientist collaborators
- Provide meticulous documentation, analyses, and summaries of results
- Foster a safe, collaborative environment
- Develop and write reports, publications, and grants
- Attend and participate in research meetings/seminars
- Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring
- Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed.
Associates will have the opportunity to meet government decision-makers and learn directly from them about the role of scientific research in addressing complex, real-world needs. Furthermore, associates will have the opportunity to learn how research products transition from the proof-of-concept stage to integrated production systems. It is expected that the postdoctoral research associate will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI.
Salary commensurate with experience per NIH standards, e.g. $55-70K/year. This appointment will be for a fixed term of 1-2 years, with prospects for extensions. Longer term and/or ongoing appointments may be offered in exceptional cases subject to performance and budget availability as well the candidate’s demonstrated capability and desire to complement the College’s strategic agendas in teaching, research and broader engagement within the University and community.
About our lab: Our work seeks to design and manipulate molecular/materials chemistry and structure for new property discovery, new functionality, and technology development by combining theory, high performance computing and experimental methods. Our theoretical methods frequently involve quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, polymer physics, materials, and biomolecular engineering. Our experimental methods frequently involve chemical synthesis, processing, and characterizations: such as: atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy, rheology, microlithography, electrospinning, and electroanalysis. We develop and implement powerful, multi-disciplinary tools to solve relevant problems with industry and national laboratories. We work within a supportive team environment with trainees ranging from undergraduate students to postdoctoral associates. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must have a Ph.D. in chemistry or equivalent expertise with demonstrated accomplishments in organic synthesis and structural characterization using modern techniques; Must be a highly motivated, innovative chemist, with demonstrated excellence in research and experience in polymer chemistry and material science. Must be team-oriented, with a proven track-record of natural leadership. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral, and written. Must be able to undertake full-time research. All candidates should describe how they support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment inside and outside the laboratory.
Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and multi-project environment. The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Detailed knowledge of chemical synthesis and materials science, and optionally computational chemistry. The successful applicant has a desire to work to solve cutting edge processing, chemistry, and structure/property science and technology relating to new high-performance materials.
