Job Description

The role of the full-time Instructor, Chemistry is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal.

The Instructor, Chemistry receives supervision from the Department Chair, Natural Sciences.


Examples of Duties


  • Implement new teaching strategies, as appropriate.
  • Evaluate textbooks for relevancy, quality and currency, making recommendations as necessary per established policy.
  • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance and performance.
  • Submit reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Participate in development of curriculum course schedule.
  • Participate in planning to identify needed courses (current and future).
  • Adhere to assigned teaching load/hours.
  • Make recommendations for assigned courses based on evaluation criteria/process.
  • Make recommendations for new courses per constraints of common course library and/or N.C. Community College System (NCCCS) guidelines.
  • Integrate new technology in instructional delivery methods.
  • Participate in development, implementation and evaluation of goals and objectives, and activities and operations of the instructional area of the College.
  • Participate in annual review of instructional program.
  • Provide information/data for the annual department budget based on stated goals.
  • Adhere to/enforce policies and procedures related to academic area.
  • Integrate teaching methods that are student oriented/student focused.
  • Submit requests for academic labs orders, maintains and requests repairs/replacement for lab equipment/supplies.
  • Maintain a hazard free environment and practices safety in lab(s) or classroom.
  • Provide guidance and advice to assigned student advisees.
  • Register advisees.
  • Maintain weekly office hours per college guidelines or as designated by off-campus assigned location.
  • Attend advisement workshops and remains current in new technologies regarding registration.
  • Keep students advised of their progress in class.
  • Write letters of recommendations for students on request, as appropriate.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities.
  • Incorporate retention strategies to encourage students to stay in programs.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in academic field.
  • Participate in professional development, as appropriate, as related to instructional area; new teaching methods; new technology; and professional organizations - locally, statewide and nationally. 
  • Request funding necessary to participate in professional development activities.
  • Assist with faculty recruitment, orientation and mentoring.
  • Participate in activities that enhance the college's mission.
  • Participate in the College's Institutional Effectiveness Plan.
  • Participate in Faculty Senate.
  • Serve on College standing and ad hoc committees, as requested.
  • Attend all convocations, graduations and other College meetings, as scheduled.
  • Serve as advisor to student clubs or organizations, as appropriate.
  • Participate in administrative activities related to student admissions, progression and graduation, as requested.
  • Adhere to College's policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications


  • Master of Science degree with 18 graduate semester hours in chemistry from a regionally accredited college or university.


  • Master of Science degree in chemistry from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Two years teaching experience at the post-secondary level.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • The NCCCS and a commitment to its mission.
  • COA's mission and a commitment to it.
  • OSHA regulations governing the storage of chemicals, dissection specimens and use of lab equipment.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Use a computer efficiently, especially standard office software.
  • Demonstrate organizational and time management skills.
