Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Instructor in the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Department undertakes excellence in education and scholarship by focusing efforts in clinical education, lifelong education and innovation in education. Appointment will be made on a 1-year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension on a yearly basis.

Purpose of the post

The Instructor will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Module Coordinators and team members to ensure the successful execution of practical classes. The Instructor’s principal role will be to teach students in practicals and tutorials, grade students’ reports, improve practicals and establishing new practicals. The Instructor must also help to recruit and lead part-time teaching assistants and to support department in any education activities.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Instructor will liaise with the various Team Leads in teaching laboratory to smoothen the running of practical classes and guiding students with report-writing and will be accountable to the Module Co-ordinator (MC). The Instructor will be able to:

  1. Recruit and lead part-time teaching assistants in teaching and tutorials;
  2. Teach students in practicals and tutorials;
  3. Grade students’ reports as part of assessment tasks;
  4. Improve practicals (eg troubleshooting problems, creating learning objects) and/or assist in designing and establishing new practicals;
  5. Assist in assessment-related tasks such as invigilation, questions and marks checking; and
  6. Support department in any education-related activities (including supporting module coordinators in modules).


The applicant should:

  1. Have a PhD degree with good knowledge, skills and expertise in Life Sciences or Biomedical Sciences from a reputable institute, preferably with training and strong interest in molecular biology and biochemistry or related disciplines;
  2. With approximately 2 years of teaching experience;
  3. Be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to details; and
  4. Have knowledge of computer applications, e.g. MS office, PowerPoint.
