Instructor/Assistant Professor, Research - Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, McGovern Medical School

Job Description

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston , a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure research track Instructor/Assistant Professor position for the Morano laboratory located in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics .

The Morano laboratory studies the proteins and processes involved in cellular protein quality control, protein folding, and stress response in the model eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae .  Protein folding in the cell is a complex and dynamic process, and the environment that a nascent polypeptide encounters during synthesis is challenging. In humans, disorders linked to protein misfolding include Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s diseases, prion-based disease, multiple triplet-repeat class ataxias and type II diabetes. Protein misfolding is also intimately linked with aging and is a primary factor influencing the “health span” of an organism. Ongoing studies focus on the biology of the Hsp110 protein chaperone family and the connections between cellular redox homeostasis and spatial quality control.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated junior faculty to work independently and direct research activities in the lab.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Reviewing and drafting manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

  • Performing molecular and cellular biology assays, such as DNA, RNA, and protein isolation, Western blotting, real-time PCR, transcription reporter assays, and fluorescence microscopy.

  • Compiling, analyzing, and evaluating data independently.

  • Building a research program that attracts extramural funding and contributing to graduate and medical education.

  • Doctorate in microbiology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry or related fields, and postdoctoral research experience.

  • Demonstrate initiative and the capability to conduct research independently.

  • Strong written and verbal communication and organization skills.

  •  2-3 years minimum experience specifically with Saccharomyces cerevisiae growth, and genetic and laboratory manipulation.
