Position title: Postdoctoral Scholar – Human Computer Interaction
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $65,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.
Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time and the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

The Department of Computational Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar, under the direction of Dr. Norman Su. The postdoctoral scholar will be part of the Authentic User Experience (AUX) Lab at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus.
In collaboration with Dr. Su and his collaborators, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to one or both of the following projects, along with other projects they may be interested in exploring: (1) an NSF-funded project on rural computing and human-computer interaction to evaluate and develop data-driven technologies with rural communities and (2) a project to examine the pragmatics of social justice in the context of tech and the Silicon Valley. The postdoctoral scholar will also be encouraged to seek out new and exciting forms of disseminating and communicating research to a diverse readership.
The successful candidate will help manage the AUX lab and collaborate on research with Dr. Su including fieldwork, system design/development/evaluation, and peer-reviewed publications. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to publish work in peer-reviewed HCI or related discipline conferences or journals. The candidate will gain experience working with doctoral students and grant writing.
Applicants with knowledge and interest in organization studies, rural computing, or designing for marginalized communities and expertise in qualitative (e.g., ethnographic methods of inquiry, grounded theory, discourse analysis), quantitative (e.g., natural language processing), humanistic methods in HCI/CSCW, computational social science, and/or prototyping are encouraged to apply. Applicants with industry experience, or experience collaborating with industry, are also strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, the position can be an opportunity to learn new methodologies or approaches. We encourage applicants from backgrounds traditionally marginalized or underrepresented in the field.
Please note that the postdoctoral scholar is expected to be based in the Silicon Valley Campus, located in Santa Clara, California. However, the postdoc will have opportunities to collaborate and interact with the main UCSC campus.
