The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) is the world’s first accredited academic program for the interdisciplinary field of engineered fabrics. Based at the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the NWI is an innovative global partnership between industry, government and academe. Operating on an “Open Innovation” platform, the Nonwovens Institute engages experts from industry and higher education in building next-generation nonwoven applications while also providing training and guidance to the field’s future leaders.

Essential Job Duties

Under the guidance of the Director of the NWI the NWI Product Development Director will be responsible for: 
  • Advocacy: Serve as internal and external advocate for the product developed by NWI, including promoting our service with potential clients, and ensuring a safe workplace. 
  • Project Proposals, Communications, and Trial Plan Management: Prepare timely project proposals, reports, and presentations for sharing with clients, based on thorough understanding of client product development needs and of relevant technologies. 
  • Manage Sponsored Product Development Projects: Lead the management of the sponsored product development projects portfolio. This includes working with members of the industry to understand the market and product requirements, as well as working with clients and multi-department NWI internal resources to execute the project from concept to commercialization stage. 
  • Resource Management: Lead and manage the resources assigned to the Sponsored Projects. This includes the assignment of specific project responsibilities to the product development resources, providing any needed coaching and direction to ensure readiness, and following up to ensure delivery of results. 
  • Trial Plan Management: Manage the trial plans needed for product development, e.g., developing trial plans, aligning details with Lab Managers, ensuring raw material availability, development of sampling and testing plans, and analysis timing.
  • Select Project Hands-on Leadership: Assume full hands-on responsibility to lead and execute select projects in the portfolio as aligned with the NWI Executive Director. 
  • Building NWI Organizational Capability: Support parallel activities within NWI as needed, e.g., planning future assets, teaching short courses.

Other Responsibilities

Examples of other responsibilities can include: participation in NWI Staff Meetings, and attending conferences and exhibitions to represent NWI and to support NWI recruiting efforts, in addition to taking on special assignment projects.

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

Familiar with the field of nonwovens and all nonwoven processes, nonwoven product development, intellectual and patent review.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineering degree and work experience. 
 
Post-baccalaureate degree (MS or PhD) and ten years industrial experience in nonwoven product development.
