Job Summary:

The Staff Psychologist—Latinx Student Focus reports directly to the Senior Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and is responsible for providing brief therapy to a culturally diverse student population, crisis intervention, and consultation and referral to the university community. As educators, they are involved in the training and supervision of predoctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows and in psycho-educational outreach to the campus community.
As part of the larger staff in Student Life, the Staff Psychologist—Latinx Student Focus collaborates and cooperates across divisions and departments to create a supportive University community which encourages student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition and commits to:

Full Job Description:

Specific Scope, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Conduct triage assessments to assess risk, determine suitable treatment, including appropriateness for a short-term therapeutic modality, and provide referrals on/off campus for students whose mental health needs are outside CAPS scope of service

  • Provide comprehensive individual, couples and group therapy services to students working within a brief therapy model. Assess and to determine appropriateness of a short-term therapeutic modality for students with serious psychological concerns.

  • Provide appropriate crisis intervention services, including assessing suicidal or homicidal risk.  Make appropriate referrals and/or facilitate off-campus hospitalization, as needed. 

  • Work as a member of a team regarding agency administrative functioning (providing coverage, supervision, training, developing policies, updates to the CAPS newsletter or website, etc.)

  • Provide information and referral for individuals who are ineligible for CAPS services. Provide appropriate referral to other campus services and/or off campus agencies. Provide advocacy for students, as appropriate.

  • Provide culturally affirming clinical services to historically marginalized groups including, Students of Color, LGBTQQAI, gender non-binary, and students of all abilities.

  • As a part of the CAPS on-call rotation, provide 24 hour crisis consultation to Office of Community Living, Student Life Division, Public Safety, and other administrative units of the University staff (approximately 3 weeks/semester).

  • Provide follow-up to callers who utilized CAPS after-hours phone consultation line, as needed.

  • Provide psychological service for presenting concerns including but not limited to depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, domestic violence, sexual assault, substance abuse, and multicultural concerns. 

  • Provide educational outreach services to campus groups as requested. Serve as guest lecturer on relevant professional topics as requested by faculty.

  • Provide mandated assessment as requested

Staff Psychologist—Latinx Student Focus Direct-Service, Consultation, and Outreach 

  • Provide culturally responsive and affirming clinical services (individual, couples, and/or group therapy; outreach; assessment; and crisis intervention) to Latinx-identified students.

  • Serve as a consistent liaison for CAPS with Latinx-identified campus organizations and community constituents to enhance departmental support for the developmental and wellness needs of students from underrepresented populations, particularly Latinx-identified.

  • Enrich and enhance services offered to focus on diversity issues and the needs of underrepresented populations, particularly Latinx-identified students. 

  • Serve on campus-wide committees or task forces with a focus on those improving the lives of Latinx-identified students.


  • Supervise Psychology Doctoral Interns and Postdoctoral Fellows. In addition to 1:1 weekly meetings, supervision includes generating mid and end-year comprehensive written evaluations; reviewing and providing constructive feedback on all intakes, progress notes and termination summaries; reviewing and providing feedback of videotaped sessions; completing written evaluations regarding in-service, case-conference, and CAPStone presentations; providing crisis supervision when needed; and fostering the professional growth & development of supervisees.


  • Create and present in-service training seminars

  • Participate in weekly case conference seminars.

  • Attend in-service trainings, as appropriate.

  • Annually, review applications, interview psychology interns and postdoctoral candidates, and provided feedback for the selection of CAPS trainees

Other Professional Activities

  • Attend weekly all staff and senior staff meetings

  • Serve on CAPS and interdepartmental hiring committees and interview candidates as requested

  • Maintain current case records for each client seen or group conducted as mandated by law.

  • Maintain current and updated knowledge of the laws and practices of psychology.

  • Maintain current, valid license to practice psychology in the state of California, including obtaining the required continuing education units for each 2-year renewal cycle.

  • Participate in staff/professional development activities

  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited doctoral program preferred.

  • License to practice psychology in the State of California or eligible within 6 months

  • Fluent in Spanish, strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to provide culturally appropriate therapeutic interventions.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.

  • Ability to collaborate with other departments and college administrators.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.

The licensed Psychologist should have an interest in working within the context of a diverse, Jesuit Catholic university located in an urban, multicultural area.  Experience within a university counseling center and prior brief therapy experience strongly preferred.

Salary Range :

$93,000-$103,000 annual
