Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) (https://www.mse.umd.edu) is seeking outstanding applicants for a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the area of Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

We seek candidates who can lead interdisciplinary materials research and establish vibrant research and teaching programs at the University of Maryland. The faculty hired will conduct research, teach and mentor students, and work collaboratively with others to enhance the impact of the MSE Department. This will include strong scholarship, innovative teaching of both graduate and undergraduate students, participation in faculty governance and institution-building, service to the broader scientific community, and forming partnerships within the MSE Department, the Clark School of Engineering, UMD and/or with industrial, governmental, or community partners. Senior hire is expected to have demonstrated leadership and should plan to lead new areas of research.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline prior to employment.

Preferences:

Academic rank is open depending on qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: 
  • Aberration-corrected TEM,
  • Experimentation with liquid cell and/or gas cell holders
  • Fast data acquisition with control of electron dose
  • Microscopy innovations to image new phenomena
  • TEM characterization together with machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.

The candidate will be expected to establish an imaginative, well-funded and collaborative research program that will serve to educate graduate and undergraduate students and advance the field.
The candidate should be an effective communicator and have an ability and interest in working with diverse student populations having a variety of backgrounds, learning styles, and skill levels. The candidate will also contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses within the MSE Department.

The candidate for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor should have a strong record of research, educational activities, and service as well as a strong funding record.

Some notable facts about the University of Maryland, College Park include:
  • Received the 8th largest gift in history to a public higher education institution from A. James & Alice B Clark Foundation of $220M. This includes funding to assist faculty and attract and fund first-year Ph.D. students.
