Job Description

Operating Title

Associate Professor of Watershed Science and Director, Water Resources Research Center, University of New Hampshire

Campus Location

Durham

Department

UNH COLSA Natural Resources & the Environment

Summary of Position

The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment in the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture seeks to hire a tenure-track Associate Professor who conducts research in Watershed Science, with a focus on land-water interactions and freshwater ecosystems. The hire will also serve as Director of the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), an institute which serves as a focal point for research and information on water issues in the state and region. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research addresses ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry, and who will develop a local or regional component to their research program, consistent with the land grant mission of the University of New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station, and the New Hampshire WRRC. Additional areas of interest could include analytical chemistry of water samples, quantitative methods in watershed science, the use of emerging sensor technologies, and data synthesis across large spatial extents or long time scales. Preference will be given to candidates whose expertise encompasses multiple biomes (e.g. temperate, tropical, arctic), and who can demonstrate management experience consistent with WRRC leadership. The candidate will also be expected to direct the University of New Hampshire Water Quality Analysis Laboratory, a facility that maintains instruments for multiple analytes used by other labs on campus, as well as providing reasonably priced analyses for other research and monitoring projects across the state of New Hampshire and beyond. The propensity to build a field-based research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students is desirable, as is the ability to collaborate broadly within the Department, the College, and the University. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant, externally supported research program, engage natural resource managers and other external partners, and deliver high quality teaching and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students in courses appropriate to their expertise and consistent with Departmental needs, and participate in university service.
