The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for an Environmental, Health & Safety Intern that wants to spend their 2024 summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 12-weeks.

Cohort 1: May 20th through August 12th

Cohort 2: June 17th through September 9th

This Intern will be onsite at our San Diego, CA - Summers Ridge, HQ location.

The Responsibilities

  • As an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Intern you will collaborate with site and regional EHS professionals to gain hands on experience managing safety and environmental regulatory compliance in a manufacturing setting as well as managing projects which will help streamline EHS processes.

  • Assist with completion of EHS regulatory reports.

  • Manage the completion of tasks associated with regulatory requirements, such as the confined space inventory, respiratory program audits, lockout/tagout audit, etc.

  • Drive improvement opportunity projects associated with the site's waste procedures, electrical safety program, lockout/tagout program, contractor safety program, etc.

  • Develop robust communications to help drive a proactive employee culture of safety.

  • Develop training content and further convert live training into the company's learning management system (LMS).

  • Assist with accident/incident follow up and root cause investigations.

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

The Individual

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Field of Study: Chemistry, environmental science, environmental health, engineering, or related fields.

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's or Master's program in the Fall Semester 2024 at an accredited university or college.

  • Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher.

  • Able to start on either May 20th or June 17th.

  • Ability to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.

  • Excellent influencing, planning, organizational and time management skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills, such as public speaking.

  • Must be a team player, be able to work independently, and be process oriented.

  • This position requires periods of standing, production floor/facility mobility (ex: bending, climbing ladders, etc.), and the ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred:

  • Rising Junior or Senior at an accredited university or college.

  • Some knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Health & Safety), EPA, TSCA, etc.

  • Strong Excel skills.

The Work Environment

Periods of standing, production floor/facility mobility (ex: bending, climbing ladders, etc.), and the ability to lift 50 lbs. Occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. Time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, at the desk on computer, or doing analytical work.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
