This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite on Campus and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine and is comprised of 102 full-time faculty members, 220 voluntary faculty members, 20 physicians employed on MSP agreements, 25 doctors employed by the VA or other facilities, 77 accredited and 13 non-accredited trainees and 100 career staff. Activities are organized in 13 sub-specialty divisions. Annual expenditures across the Department total over $66.5M with a global research portfolio of over $19M. The Ross Lab at UCSD is looking to recruit an incumbent with an interest in building precision health tools to enable next-generation health care delivery. This position provides the opportunity to work with clinicians and perform a deep dive into the clinical area of cardiovascular diseases and developing AI models for disease detection and outcome prediction across multiple institutions. This project will involve collaborating across institutions to develop and implement AI models that show promise in reducing bias and maintainingaccuracy across different patient populations and institutions.

The incumbent will use bioinformatics concepts and apply computational procedures to build generalizable machine-learning models to detect cardiovascular diseases using electronic health record data. There is particular interest in developing and evaluating EHR-based foundation models and federated learning approaches. Data sources include electronic health records from multiple sources including UCHealth, Veterans Affairs, and the American Family Cohort. This position involves curating clinical data sets, applying cutting-edge machine learning and deep learning techniques for model development. The ideal candidate will have experience with project management and team leadership as well as strong writing skills with published peer-reviewed work. The applicant should be comfortable with data management, cleaning and statistical analysis, and overseeing regulatory compliance for data utilization. This role requires working independently with guidance from the PI.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced bioinformatics programming professional with a broad understanding of computational algorithms; identifies and resolves a wide range of issues/software bugs. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational/programming, or related area plus three (3) years of applicable experience or equivalent experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development, and data structures.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification, and implementation.

  • Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Working knowledge of modern medicine and applicable field of research.

  • Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.

  • Self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem-solving skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of web, application, and data security concepts and methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Masters or PhD in a computational and/or data science-related field (e.g. computer science, biomedical informatics, computational biology, or statistics with experience with machine learning applications).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $91,300 - $170,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $43.73 - $81.75

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
