Position Overview

The Director, Medical Science Liaisons is responsible for serving as a field-facing leader to Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) on the Field Medical Team in Medical Affairs. The Director, Medical Science Liaisons reports to the Senior Director, Field Medical and collaborates to ensure consistent development and execution of field medical strategies that align with brand and portfolio strategy. The Director, Medical Science Liaisons will work with Medical Affairs colleagues, cross-functional teams, and external partners to lead the strategy, planning, implementation, and execution of field-focused Medical Affairs initiatives that are relevant to Exact Sciences' on-market and pipeline assets. The Director, Medical Science Liaisons is also responsible for providing oversight of all team activities in accordance with corporate, regulatory, and healthcare compliance guidelines.

This position is field based / remote.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead and inspire a regional team of MSLs in the execution of scientific engagement, clinical, and health economic & outcomes research (HEOR) data that is appropriately prioritized and compliantly supports brand strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director, Field Medical to set a vision and energize the MSL team's evolution into a Best-in-Class Field Medical function.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director, Field Medical, to ensure the development, cross-functional socialization, execution and quarterly updating of the Scientific Engagement Strategy for respective MSL territories that align to brand strategy and core communication objectives for Medical Affairs.
  • Coach individual MSLs to develop and execute the Scientific Engagement Strategy for their assigned territory, aligning compliantly with cross-functional business strategy.
  • Coach MSLs on compliantly supporting brand strategy through scientific engagement.
  • Taking a 'best team' approach, prioritize development of MSLs by identifying and coaching on professional growth opportunities both in role and beyond role. Provide feedback on areas of improvement, and coach to and agree on a plan to address areas of development.
  • Partner with the Medical Education & Communications Team (MECT) to identify needs for resources, education, training, and certification required to enhance clinical and HEOR acumen to execute on field medical engagement; to prioritize the delivery of high-quality field engagement.
  • Partner with the Medical Education & Communications Team (MECT) to ensure field commercial training requests are appropriately triaged.
  • In collaboration with Senior Director, Field Medical, develop and monitor metrics that align with productivity goals for the team.
  • Through an innovative lens, review and analyze MSL team performance metrics and provide insight on the ability of proposed metrics to incentivize desired behaviors in the field.
  • Through regular 1:1 meetings, regularly scheduled field rides, and regional strategy meetings, ensure that regional productivity aligns with corporate initiatives and Objectives and Key Results (OKR) metrics.
  • Work closely with cross-functional regional leadership (e.g., Commercial, Market Access, Marketing, Clinical Affairs, Pipeline) to ensure there is tactical alignment with brand strategy and compliant partnership between MSLs and cross-functional partners.
  • Provide insight into market trends and competition for Exact Sciences marketed and pipeline assets and identify how trends impact ongoing engagement.
  • Provide timely and expert review of expense reports and field activities (i.e., HCP meals, Veeva entries) to ensure compliant activity and alignment with corporate guidelines.
  • Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to delegating tasks and responsibilities, assess employee performance and provide helpful feedback and training opportunities.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to travel up to 60% of working time away from work location, domestically and internationally (by land and air), and including overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate-level degree (i.e., PhD, PharmD, MD, DO, DNP) or Advanced professional degree (i.e., PA, NP) with 2+ years of post-graduate experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong expertise with regulatory guidance and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading and/or mentoring teams.
  • Strong experience developing and executing field medical strategies.
  • Ability to meet any requirements set by healthcare facilities for access to those facilities (e.g., vaccination requirements, mask requirements, etc.).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license; no suspended, revoked, surrendered, invalid, etc. allowed.
  • No more than two moving violations, events, or accidents within the last 36 months.
  • No alcohol or drug event in which a vehicle was driven by the candidate or employee, including but not limited to Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) failure, refusal to submit to alcohol or drug test, alcohol related suspension, etc. in the last 36 months.
  • No other results from the Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) check that exposes Exact Sciences to what Exact Sciences deems to be an unacceptable level of liability.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal Degree in life sciences (i.e., PharmD, MD, PhD).
  • Experience leading or managing medical affairs teams.
  • Experience in public health, population health management, health insurance, and/or medical quality.
  • Experience in the GI, Oncology, Primary Care, Hepatology, and/or Women's Health spaces.
  • In-depth knowledge of the health care market.
  • Experience with clinical trials.
  • Experience working with and/or for advocacy groups and professional societies.

Salary Range:

$174,000.00 - $277,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
