Are you interested in joining a team of engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists as we pursue innovative solutions to the timely and timeless maritime navigation problem under constantly evolving challenges?

If so, then we want you on our team! We are seeking a Systems Engineer to help us ensure the US Navy has the most accurate, yet reliable navigation systems in the world. Our efforts support navigation missions of utmost importance to the United States in an increasingly challenging environment. Our team provides critical navigation insight into a variety of US Navy maritime platforms, primarily the Navy’s submarine fleet conducting strategic deterrence missions, but we also support other US Navy surface/subsurface platforms conducting conventional operations.

 

In this role:

  • You will provide systems engineering thought leadership and expertise focusing on requirements analysis, concept/technology assessments and test & evaluation for maritime navigation systems supporting the US Navy’s strategic and conventional missions
  • In order to assist in the development of requirements, you will develop an understanding of the current & future maritime navigation capabilities along with insight into the evolving mission needs.
  • You will provide domain expertise while leading/coordinating analysis on current and future navigation system capabilities and performance, as well as provide supporting data and associated recommendations to advise program sponsors.
  • You will deliver formal presentations and/or well-written technical documents to sponsors and contractors that effectively communicate analysis results and recommendations.
  • You will join a highly talented and motivated team of mathematicians, engineers and physicists focused on navigation analysis with many opportunities to collaborate with other innovative experts from a variety of technical fields.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a B.S in engineering, mathematics, physics or related technical field.
  • Have proven experience performing systems engineering in the design, development, or evaluation of complex systems.
  • Have proven experience developing and refining functional and physical systems and systems of systems architectures.
  • Have the verbal and writing skills and disposition necessary for documenting and presenting work to APL colleagues and government sponsors.
  • Have familiarity with US Department of Defense (preferably US Navy) technical and programmatic processes.
  • Have a general understanding of maritime navigation technical concepts and/or US Navy operations.
  • Enjoy solving challenging technical problems requiring both self-motivated independent investigation and collaborative team effort.
  • Are able to obtain Secret, or Top Secret] level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have an advanced degree in systems engineering.
  • Have demonstrated understanding of US Navy surface and subsurface navigation concepts.
  • Are skilled in conceptual design, requirements analysis, conducting trade studies, test and test program planning across the system lifecycle, and risk analysis and management.
  • Have familiarity with US Navy Strategic Systems Programs technical and programmatic processes.
  • Have familiarity with systems engineering software, especially model based systems engineering tools like Magic Draw, DOORS, Cameo Enterprise Architecture and MATLAB Simulink.
  • Have strong knowledge of SysML in support of specification, analysis, design, verification, and validation of systems and systems of systems.
  • Have a Top Secret security clearance.
