About the Department

The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) is a UNC inter-institutional research institute whose primary focus is to promote the discovery of new knowledge about global, regional, and local climate variability and its impacts; and to provide information that is critical for determining trends and validating climate forecasts at all these spatial scales. A primary activity of NCICS is the operation of the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth Systems Science (CISESS) formed through a consortium of academic, non-profit, and community organizations with leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) on behalf of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. CISESS provides foci for collaborative research and associated activities in support of NOAA mission goals related to meteorological satellite and climate data and information research and development.

Essential Job Duties

The Associate Director will serve as a leader within the Institute, working in conjunction with and supporting the Institute Director in furthering the Institute’s mission and goals.

The Associate Director will be responsible for the oversight of highly complex large-scale research activities for multiple projects, overseeing the development and integrity of data collection, serving as co-investigator or principal investigator on research projects, obtaining external research funding, and serving as an authoritative source for other scientists and researchers. The Associate Director will also mentor staff in their career progressions through monthly or more frequent interactions.

The split in duties is approximately: 40% management, 30% research related, 20% mentoring, and 10% outreach and engagement.

An affiliate research faculty (non-tenured) appointment within the Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences Department is possible, if departmental qualifications are met.

The Associate Director’s primary duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Working in conjunction with the Institute Director;
  • Overseeing non-exempt and exempt researchers and support staff;
  • Working with internal and external researchers on climate science research activities;
  • Writing and submitting peer-reviewed papers for publication in scientific journals;
  • Developing proposals for extramural funding;
  • Making timely presentations at appropriate scientific venues.
  • Coordinating with data providers, other NOAA programs/projects, and other teams and working groups;
  • Supporting communication of institute information as relevant or requested;
  • Mentoring staff;
  • Participating in Institute events/meetings and providing expertise and assistance to Institute staff;

Other Responsibilities

  • Performing other related duties as assigned;
  • Occasional overnight business travel may be required.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • PhD in meteorology, atmospheric or environmental sciences, mathematics, engineering, physical science, or related field.
  • Five or more years of formal post-degree professional experience working with in situ climate related observations and global and downscaled climate model data.
  • Three or more years of experience working in a supervisory capacity in laboratory or academic environment.
  • Five years of experience with UNIX/Linux systems including high performance environments.
  • In rare instances, an individual with comparable professional experience but less than a doctoral degree will be considered, on an exception basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • At least 20 peer reviewed publications in climate science or a related area.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining competitive grants, mentoring students and research staff, and working in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Strong computer literacy with a background in statistics and data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
  • Ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience with the methods of climate change attribution.
  • Participation in a national or international assessment team (e.g., Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, U.S. Global Change Research Program assessments).
  • Four or more years of experience performing and/or analyzing global or regional climate model simulations.
  • Experience with observational meteorological data analysis, e.g., surface, upper air, satellite data, etc.
  • Leadership of a sustained climate research program/group.
  • At least 30 peer reviewed publications in climate science or a related area.
  • Demonstrated experience developing a variety of climate model diagnostics and inter-comparisons products.
  • Familiarity with the National Centers for Environmental Information.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
