Computational Toxicologist: Research Scientist, Predictive & Investigative Safet

General Summary:

The Predictive and Investigative Safety Assessment (PISA) group is seeking candidates with a strong desire to be part of a highly innovative company aimed at transforming the lives of people with serious diseases, their families and society. This role will support preclinical safety assessment for the global research portfolio from target selection through the lead optimization phase. This individual will analyze and visualize multi-omics datasets, support the development of complex models to evaluate the safety of new candidate molecules, and be pivotal in the execution of the overall toxinformatics data strategy to support Vertex discovery programs. In addition, the individual will contribute to the evolution and implementation of the Preclinical Safety (PSA) and broader Preclinical Sciences (PCS) data strategies.

The ideal candidate will have both a life sciences and computational background, enabling them to develop and execute computational data analysis and visualizations for the PISA group, to predict specific organ toxicities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide in silico genetic toxicity assessments to project teams and the Vertex Impurities Safety Team (VIST)
  • Work with Vertex scientists to identify toxico-informatics challenges, then plan and implement data solutions including workflows, databases and dashboards to address data analysis, modeling, and automation needs
  • Identify, optimize and conduct cutting-edge in silico safety assessment of Vertex therapeutic targets and molecules to identify potential development challenges
  • Develop and execute a transcriptomics data modelling strategy to predict specific organ toxicities
  • Work with internal and external partners to guide the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of current and new quantitative systems toxicology approaches (improving prediction and translation of drug safety risks)
  • Interact with strategic partners to design and execute transcriptomic studies and other potential computational analyses to meet specific project needs
  • Communicate unambiguous critical and significant data to various bodies including project teams and Vertex leadership as required
  • Develop external collaborations within the academic and industrial sectors to enhance Vertex's discovery toxicology capabilities

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience with scripting (Python or R/Bioconductor)
  • Ability to design, develop, and deploy databases (e.g. Oracle, MySQL, etc.) and computational pipelines (e.g., Snakemake, Docker, etc.)
  • Strong and demonstrable interpersonal skills with an ability to develop solid, long-term relationships and to influence others
  • Proven computational / scientific acumen with the ability to creatively seek resolutions to complex issues
  • Strong problem solver who is highly organized with the ability to thrive and lead in a matrixed work environment with rapidly changing priorities
  • Experience of working on cross-disciplinary project and delivery teams

Other Requirements

  • Experience conducting gene expression analysis
  • Experience utilizing predictive genetic toxicology tools and models

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, Masters degree or PhD - computational focus
  • PhD and 0-3 years of experience or,
  • Masters degree and 3 years of experience or,
  • Bachelors degree and 6 years of experience

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:

Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
