Class Summary
Under the leadership of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students provides alignment and direction to student-facing programmatic efforts across the College. Serves as the lead for involvement and student development efforts across the College. Responsible for fiscal and program oversight for Student Life, TRIO Upward Bound, Judicial Affairs, Collegiate High School Program, Tutoring Center, campus CARE Team and Student Resources/Community Resource Center. The Dean of Students is responsible for creating programming and activities that encourage a safe environment for students that is conducive to learning, contributes to their intellectual, emotional, academic development. Offers student growth and professional development opportunities through increased classroom, campus, and community engagement initiatives. Provides leadership and effective management over policy reviews and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience
  • Master’s in Counseling, Student Services, or equivalent

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in supervisory position in higher education, preferably a community college

  • Experience in student conduct, counseling, TRiO programs, student life or other similar areas

Preferred Education/Training/Experience
Doctorate preferred

Minimum Knowledge & Skills
  • Budget and planning monitoring
  • Training program principles, practices and techniques.
  • Applicable computer programs and equipment.
  • Monitoring and evaluating staff.
  • Facilitating effective group interactions.
  • Negotiating and solving problems.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

 


Preferred Knowledge & Skills
Oral proficiency in Spanish

Job Duties
  • Supervises Student Life, TRiO Upward Bound, Tutoring Center, Collegiate High School, Judicial Affairs, and Student Resources/Community Resource Center, following guidelines of each department including hiring, training, conducting performance evaluations and making discipline recommendations. This position leads the campus CARE Team.

  • Supervises the coordinate adjudication of violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

  • Manage student concerns and engage in mediation between students and college personnel.

  • Provide leadership for the implementation of the institutional effectiveness system for Student Affairs. Coordinate and recommend modifications and/or changes in the procedures, policies and forms related to students.

  • Represent Student Affairs on various committees and participates in campus-wide research efforts to assess ways to enhance student success.

  • Coordinates with staff, faculty, and community agencies in the provision of student services.

  • Oversee all departmental budgets and expense and revenue reports to ensure appropriate and cost effectiveness.

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Physical Requirements
Frequent walking and standing. Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
