The NC State Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is committed to offering a high quality undergraduate Philosophy curriculum, including a major and minor in Philosophy, that gives students an opportunity to confront through historical and contemporary resources a wide range of central philosophical issues, such as the relationship between the mind and brain, the ethical implications of scientific advances, the justification of moral, political, and legal institutions, the relationship between human knowledge and reality, and the nature of the logic that structures human language and thought; offering a high-quality undergraduate Religious Studies curriculum, including a major and a minor in Religious Studies, that provides students an extended opportunity to examine the multiple interpretations of the category “religion” – including religion as a social construction, as an element of psychological development, as a branch of metaphysics, and as a constellation of ritual practices – and the ways in which religious traditions have played a central role in human culture and history; developing the analytical abilities and expressive powers of our students; providing and expanding educational and research opportunities at the graduate level; and conducting research, teaching and scholarship that further knowledge and understanding in the disciplines of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
Essential Job Duties
The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NC State University welcomes applications for the position of Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor in in Philosophy during 2024/25. These are short term contract positions involving one or more courses for one or two semesters.
Courses in which the Department may have teaching needs include Introduction to Philosophy, Contemporary Moral Issues, Issues in Business Ethics, Data Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, Logic, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, and other PHI courses listed in the NC State course catalog (http://catalog.ncsu.edu/coursedescriptions/phi/).
We may require instructors for either classroom courses or online distance education courses (but local residence is required for both).
Depending on the Department’s needs, selected candidates would be offered contracts to teach one or more course-sections for either a single semester or the full academic year.

Perform other duties as assigned by the department head.
Minimum Education and Experience
Lecturer: Master’s Degree in Philosophy or related field, an equivalent degree or equivalent professional experience is required. If teaching graduate level courses, a Doctor’s Degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience is required.
Assistant Teaching Professor: Doctor’s Degree in Philosophy or related field, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience is required.
Rank is dependent upon qualifications.

Other Required Qualifications
- Strong commitment to excellence in teaching is expected.
- Excellent communication skills.
