Job Description

The Director of Grants and Sponsored Projects at Salem State oversees the university’s efforts to secure public and government grants and awards that support our priorities. The director serves as the primary administrator of grants for the university and will be responsible for providing vision, expertise, and oversight for its public grants program in alignment with the university’s mission to contribute to a global society through equitable educational access, teaching, and scholarship. The director will advance the university’s position as an emerging HSI/MSI and promote the values of the new strategic plan to center student success by supporting and growing institutional funding and research.

  1. Oversee the Office of Sponsored Projects and lead with accountability for federal and state grants and contracts
  2. Develop and process grant proposals and budgets; provide support to faculty and administrators with grant writing
  3. Coordinate all pre-award activities; facilitate post-award support with financial services and faculty including: proposal development, budget development, proposal routing and approval, proposal submission, award setup, monitoring and reporting
  4. Develop and implement policies and procedures in accordance with federal and state regulations, in alignment with institutional guidance
  5. Collaborate with financial services and other administrative departments and develop interdepartmental processes
  6. Develop and maintain internal systems to track pre- and post award reporting and compliance requirements for funders
  7. Maintain working knowledge of compliance requirements for federal and state funding policies, procedures, and guidelines in management of sponsored projects
  8. Actively develop internal and external relationships in support of institutional funding goals. Provide leadership that fosters collegial, supportive relations among departments, faculty, staff, and stakeholders
  9. Regularly communicate opportunities for funding based on research, knowledge of funding agencies, and grant announcements
  10. Work collaboratively and lend expertise as needed to the Office of Advancement as related to corporate or private funding opportunities
  11. Plan and implement strategies to generate external funding opportunities by identifying potential projects that meet university priorities and researching funding sources
  12. Supervise and support sponsored projects staff
  13. Create and modify systems to enhance operations including grant tracking database, internal website, routing approvals, etc.
  14. Develop internal communications and disseminate information on grants and awards as appropriate.
  15. Participate in meetings with the assistant provost and other academic affairs staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Expertise in application of federal and state regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Expertise in grant proposal and budget development and submission
  • Experience engaging and supporting faculty in understanding and pursuing various funded opportunities
  • Experience with and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and exercise discretion in all communication

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • 7-10 years experience with grant seeking and grant funding
  • Strong management experience, strong organizational and interpersonal skills and a commitment to building and maintaining strong relationships across campus
  • Proficiency in Office 365 applications, grant routing and tracking database, and online funding tools and submission sites (e.g., research.gov, grants.gov)
  • Excellent oral and written communication in a professional and collegial manner with various constituencies

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid position with on-campus, in-person responsibilities in Salem, MA, which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.

 

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
