Position Summary

The Student Success Specialist fosters student success and excellence by providing an inclusive and respectful academic and work environment, assisting students with accessing the benefits of external and community resources. This position supports students using a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens and works collaboratively with external partners to help students as they progress toward their goals by encouraging them to seek non-academic resources and opportunities on and off campus. This position will work with external and community partners and faculty and staff across campus to support student success. The Student Success Specialist reports to the Director of Student Success. (Continuation of position is contingent upon grant funding)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Cultivate student relationships and offer mentoring guided by curriculum objectives.
  • Deliver comprehensive wellness resources and guidance directly to students.
  • Ensure consistent communication with students following college protocols.
  • Identify and collaborate with external and community partners to enhance student access to support resources.
  • Engage in community outreach activities and presentations as required.
  • Oversee referral services and coordinate follow-up engagement with referred students.
  • Establish and manage a follow-up system for students referred to campus or community resources.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with community organizations offering valuable services to Trenholm State students.
  • Provide support and referrals to students facing academic or personal challenges, including those on academic probation.
  • Maintain regular contact with assigned students throughout the semester via phone, email, in-person meetings, and other communication channels to monitor progress and offer guidance.
  • Facilitate connections between students and campus services, resources, and extracurricular opportunities.
  • Encourage student accountability for academic performance and career aspirations.
  • Conduct well-being checks and ensure students access resources outlined in individual academic success plans.
  • Organize and promote student engagement activities and programs.
  • Develop initiatives to increase student utilization of support resources and services.
  • Track student utilization of external services and resources.
  • Participate in college-wide committees as required.
  • Uphold professional conduct in all interactions with students, college community members, and external partners.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of college information, organization, opportunities, and policies.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of new student orientation programs.
  • Prepare and submit necessary reports in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the development, preparation, and implementation of intervention plans for at-risk students.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through participation in professional organizations, seminars, etc.
  • Provide documentation as requested to support accreditation, grant administration, and reporting efforts of the College.
  • Fulfill other assigned work-related responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • One year of full-time experience of working with students in the fields of higher education, counseling (personal, social and vocational) student development, advising or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Documented evidence of work experience with at risk populations.
  • Demonstrated exceptional listening, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills and detail-oriented.
 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a community college.
  • A sensitivity and commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Knowledge of the transition needs of first-year and transfer students.
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and various situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply self-awareness and good judgment; refer students to other professionals when appropriate
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines.
  • Excellent customer service skills; including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, colleagues, and staff.
  • Ability to travel to different campuses.
  • Must be willing and available to work flexible hours. May require some evening hours and activities at all campus locations.
