POSITION TITLE: Postdoctoral & Graduate Student Professional Development Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
Plans, develops, and implements career and professional development training programs for Scripps Research graduate students on the California and Florida campuses and postdocs on the California campus. Builds strategic relationships with faculty, administrators, postdocs, graduate students, and external partners to assess needs, coordinate services, and arrange events. Gives presentations, advises trainees, and arranges events and programs supporting the mission of the Career and Professional Development Office (CPDO).
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop and maintain curriculum for professional development courses, workshops, and training programs, including options offered in the virtual environment. Topics may include mentorship, job search skills, career exploration, laboratory leadership, scientific communication, etc. Invite and manage faculty or guest speakers and teach workshops directly.
- Provide career planning, job search, and professional development advice and coaching to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars via in-person career counseling appointments, videoconferencing, phone calls, and email.
- Organize and present training courses in Research Ethics for the institute's graduate students and postdocs.
- Oversee professional development-related trainee email distribution lists, edit weekly CPDO newsletter, and present postdoc orientations.
- Build and maintain relationships with employers, trainees, faculty, service providers, trainers, and professional groups. Coordinate career training initiatives with other departments, institutes, and campus organizations.
- Develop and procure career-related resources, including reference materials, books, samples, videos, and links to other resources, to aid Scripps Research graduate students and postdocs in developing their professional skills.
- Strategically publicize programs through social media, email, websites, and other channels.
- Contribute to, publicize, and develop content for the institute's alumni Web portal and CPDO Website.
- Collaborate with the International Services Office to organize and publicize career-related and cultural programming tailored to international students and postdocs.
- Work closely with other institute staff to coordinate initiatives to enhance postdoc recruiting and retention, which may include fellowship administration, Website/social media content creation, coordination of virtual and in-person postdoc recruitment events, etc.
- Continually evaluate programs by tracking outcomes and impact, using program evaluation to modify and improve programs.
- Create reports and presentations for leadership and stakeholders to explain benefits and impact of professional development programs.
- Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.
REQUIREMENTS:

- PhD. in a scientific discipline, education, counseling or communications, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- 3-year minimum direct experience working with graduate students and/or postdocs on career and professional development related issues preferred.
- 3-year minimum demonstrated knowledge of the science PhD labor market, employment trends, and recruitment strategies across industries, including academia preferred.
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience presenting in front of groups.
- Demonstrated experience creating marketing and communication materials to raise awareness, educate or persuade. Knowledge of best practices for using social media to engage trainees, faculty, alumni, and employers.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated experience using Zoom, Teams, and Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to follow-through, think creatively, and work both independently and in teams.
- Ability to travel, including out-of-state, may be required to meet business needs.
- This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus.
COMPENSATON:
The expected hiring range for this position is $78,600 to $95,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
