Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

An opening for a Professional Track Research Faculty role (Assistant Research Professor or Assistant Research Scientist) within the Department of Computer Sciences is available. Prof. Dinesh Manocha will guide this researcher for the GAMMA group (gamma.umd.edu). This position is intended for experienced researchers looking to build a long-term career in professional academic research and take on a significant management and leadership role. The GAMMA group conducts research in robotics, computer vision and simulated environments. This position would represent a scientific leadership position on a jointly funded project in collaboration with the Army Research Lab as part of UMD’s newly created Joint Research Laboratory. It would also position the researcher with access to a broad base of collaborators and opportunities from which to launch and build his or her own research enterprise.

Some specific duties include:
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams of researchers (e.g., engineers, computer scientists), to design and carry out research, primarily at the intersection of computer vision, robotics and machine learning.
  • Producing high-impact research in support of publications or proposals.
  • Developing software systems that Army researchers can use.
  • Reviewing and synthesizing existing literature to inform new proposal directions or whitepapers for federal agencies.
  • Working with and training faculty research assistants, graduate students, and undergraduate assistants on various problems in robotics and computer vision.
  • Directing and conducting data collection and analysis efforts and evaluating the results at Army Research Labs facilities.
  • Preparing presentations, reports, funding proposals, and scholarly publications related to research and communicating those deliverables to internal or external sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Ph.D. awarded in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Experience:
  • Past experience directing and training junior researchers (e.g. graduate or undergraduate research assistants)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, such as managing teams of engineers or scientists.
  • Past experience directing and training junior researchers (e.g. graduate or undergraduate research assistants)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral/presentations and written.

  • Autonomous Robotic systems
  • Planning and Navigation

  • Familiarity with ROS, sensors, and hardware integration
