The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research, and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic, and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources is seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic team to study the impacts of prescribed burning on water quality and quantity. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research in the interface of Wildland Fire and Watershed Science, with a focus on understanding the interactions between fire dynamics, hydrological processes, and ecosystem responses. The project began 16 years ago with the creation of a paired watershed in the Piedmont of North Carolina.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and conduct research on topics related to wildland fire behavior, fire ecology, and hydrological impacts of fire.
  • Implement field experiments using fire science, data analysis, and modeling studies.
  • Train summer students and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including ecologists, hydrologists, climate scientists, fire scientists, and land managers.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals and progress reports.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm

Department Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Hydrology, Forestry, Ecology, or Fire Science.
  • Demonstrated expertise in wildland fire science, hydrology, or a closely related area.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with statistical or computational modeling tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience with field measurement of fuels, fire intensity, GIS or experience with field measurements in watershed hydrology.
  • A track record of publications in high-impact journals.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and project management.
  • Ability to obtain a North Carolina Drivers License
  • Experience with fire, including NWCG courses: IC-100, S-130, S-190, L-180
