Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research, and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic, and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

Primary duties of the Postdoctoral Research Scholar include, but are not limited to the following:

Lead research in conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the wood pellets supply chain in the Southern United States. Specifically,
  • Assess the carbon footprint of the wood pellet production process using various woody feedstock including logging residues, mill residues, and roundwood pulpwood of both pine and hardwood species.
  • Utilize FIA’s Inventory and Timber Product Output (TPO) data in the various supply chain stages and process of wood pellet production to shipment within the “cradle to grave” system boundary of LCA.
  • Develop a life cycle analysis (LCA) framework to estimate the carbon balance and carbon emissions from each stage of the wood pellet supply chain, from feedstock harvesting to overseas shipments.
  • Define a system boundary with empirical data by utilizing TPO, inventory, and other FIA datasets within the LCA framework to estimate the carbon footprint of each supply chain stage of wood pellet production
  • Analyze the data and prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Lead and assist PI in grant proposals
  • Work in results dissemination and outreach efforts

Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm
