Research Technologist

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Physiology is seeking a Research Technologist who will work on a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to run an independent research project as well as be involved in other projects by assisting experiments.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
  • May utilize in vivo models in experiments.
  • Collects data and monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of research results, as required by research protocol.
  • Recommends revisions to experimental methods based upon observations of the data.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field (neuroscience, chemistry or biomedical engineering).
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with basic lab methods, such as making chemical solutions, histological techniques and molecular techniques.
  • Experience with Molecular biology experiments.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Programming using Python.

Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CC  
Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($38,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:30am-5:00pm 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt 
Location: School of Medicine Campus
