Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Research Professor will be responsible research and instruction in ecology and ethnobiology. This is a 1.0 FTE 12-month appointment. The successful candidate is expected to commit 0.50 FTE to instruction and 0.50 FTE to research. The 0.50 FTE instruction will be split between teaching a three-credit hour undergraduate class in Forest Ecology or similar once per year (0.20 FTE) and developing transdisciplinary experiential learning opportunities through the AgroEcology Corridor Initiative (0.30 FTE). The successful candidate is expected to conduct collaborative research in the field of forest ethnobiology (0.50 FTE), generating extramurally-funded projects as a PI or co-PI with partners on the UMD campus or with external institutions, and publishing peer-reviewed papers. The scope of research may extend across various levels, from the molecular to the ecosystem, that lead to new knowledge on human-natural systems.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Develop and teach an undergraduate class in Forest Ecology one time per year
2. Contribute to design and development of the UMD EcoWellness Walk component of the AgroEcology Corridor
3. Coordinate campuswide collaborator contributions to development of experiential learning opportunities in relation to the EcoWellness Walk, in particular, and the broader AgroEcology Corridor
4. Mentor senior capstone teams from various departments and colleges that develop experiential learning elements of the AgroEcology Corridor
5. Conduct collaborative research in the field of forest ecology or ethnobiology

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
The incumbent must have a Ph.D in Ecology or closely related field as well as a strong background in ethnobiology.

Experience:

A minimum of three years’ experience in ecological and ethnobiological research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability of advising undergraduate students.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Relevant post-doctoral and/or professional research and teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in high-quality journals.
  • The ability to collaborate with faculty members in the department of Environmental Science and Technology and Plant Science and Landscape Agriculture, and complement cross-departmental research activities.

Additional Information:

Salary range (12-month): $46,109.83-$176,206.72.
