Summary of Position

Under administrative direction of the Director of the UNH Data Science Core, the direct supervision of the Assistant Core Director and under the purview of the chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biomedical Sciences, this position will provide expertise, technical consultations, and project management tracking and support for research projects, assume supervisory responsibility for Data Science Core technical staff, and conduct instructional and outreach activities in areas relevant to the mission of the Data Science Core.

  • PhD in data science or closely related field with extensive experience in the application of bioinformatics across multidisciplinary areas of research.
  • Prior experience providing bioinformatics consulting and research project design and analysis.
  • Proficiency and demonstrated mastery of programming languages (e.g., R, Python).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extensive experience in the development and delivery of bioinformatics training.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the development of cloud-based computing.
  • Experience with molecular biology and NGS workflows and the ability to work closely with wet lab personnel for advising and troubleshooting protocols.
  • Experience managing user accounts and installing software on HPC clusters/servers.

  • Experience with data analytics applications in engineering and the broad spectrum of genomic tools in the life sciences.
  • Teaching experience at the university and K-12 levels.

Duty/Responsibility

Bioinformatics support
  • Under the general direction of the Data Science Core Director and the Deputy Director of the Research Computing Center, and under the immediate supervision of the Assistant Core Director, provide guidance to clients on all aspects of the “data life cycle” of research projects, including initial consultations, experimental design direct analysis of data, appropriate application of methodology and analyses and support for the management of data to meet the FAIR principles of data science.

Duty/Responsibility

Technical staff supervision 
  • Provide supervision, training, and project management to technical staff, (including PAT staff, graduate student research assistants, and undergraduate student assistants) that are providing Bioinformatics support and data analytical services through the Data Science Core.

Instruction & Outreach
  • Under the direction of the Department Chair and with the approval of the Dean, teach up to four credits of courses per year in bioinformatics and data science.
  • In addition, create training materials, offer workshops and participate in outreach programs in statistics and data science, review current research program needs, and establish communications channels for current participants in research efforts.
  • Oversee the management of the non-thesis masters degree in Bioinformatics.

  • Assist in preparation of research proposals and estimates of budgets for service providers as required.
