About the Department

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (NC State CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians, veterinarian scientists, and biomedical scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.

The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the NC State CVM trains veterinarians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in research-based careers focused on discovering new information about animal and human health and disease and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and wellbeing.

Essential Job Duties

The McCarthy lab explores how mesenchymal cells promote proper intestinal stem cell homeostasis in development, health, and disease. We focus on how extracellular signaling pathways direct tissue/cell interactions and explore mesenchymal dysfunction in inflammatory bowel disease. Our lab uses mouse as its primary model system, including in vivo genetic techniques to characterize and assess mechanistic functions of cells in intestinal tissue homeostasis, disease, and development; epithelial perturbation via irradiation and colitis formation; and in vitro methods, primarily intestinal organoids and primary cell cultures, to test mesenchymal-epithelial functions in vitro.

Their group has strong connections with gastrointestinal researchers at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University through the NIH funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD).

Primary duties include but are not limited to:
  • Oversee and provide support with molecular biology and histology techniques with mouse and human cells as well as with mouse and human tissues.
  • Oversee and provide support in managing mouse colonies for the lab including basic husbandry tasks, genotyping, and collection of tissue for downstream analyses.
  • Oversee and provide support with cell culture including pluripotent stem cells, primary cells, 3D organoid cultures, and established cell lines from mouse, rat, or human origin.
  • Oversee and record completed and accurate laboratory methods and results in an online laboratory notebook.
  • Use appropriate tools and software to document and analyze collected data.
  • Communicate summaries of experimental results to the lab staff and principal investigator.
  • Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.
  • Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff.
  • Oversee ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.
