Research Engineer
Job Description
PROGRAM ENGINEER 1, Aeronautics and Astronautics, to be responsible for fundamental research Duties (80%) including help develop a capability to experimentally and analytically assess megawatt-class electrical machines for turboelectric propulsion applications. Provide student support and proposal assistance (10%) including provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students involved in research projects. Will be responsible for weekly updates and independent work (5%) including deliver high-quality weekly updates on research progress and experimental outcomes. Will support sponsor engagement (1%) including engage on a regular basis with project sponsors and project advisors from government and industry, taking on roles of project leadership, program development, and management; and other duties as needed or required (4%).
Job Requirements:REQUIRED: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a field closely related to air-breathing/rocket propulsion and turbomachinery, focused on experimental and computational assessment and characterization of internal flows in fluid machinery; a minimum of two years of related experience in a research environment (which may include experience as a graduate student), especially design, development and execution of turbomachinery experiments, numerical computations and first-principles based modeling; experience in rotordynamics and forced-response system identification of fluid machinery along with some demonstrated project management experience; capability to achieve successful collaborations within the home organization as well as with industrial partners; excellence in oral and written technical communication; ability to interface with sponsors and external project advisors, excellent project management and organizational skills; demonstrated programming skills in Labview, Python, and Matlab; ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues using discretion.
