The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

About the Opportunity

The position will support research in quantum materials growth using molecular beam epitaxy, atomic-scale characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

What You'll Do

  • Molecular beam epitaxy of quantum materials, and their characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
  • Attend research conferences and read scientific literature to keep abreast of technological advances and current research findings. Search scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures most appropriate for research goals.
  • Independent experimental data analysis, maintain detailed logs of work-related activities, including accurate laboratory records and data on research methods, procedures, and results. Maintain lab equipment; keep accurate inventory of lab assets; monitor and assure proper use and conditions of lab equipment. Assure compliance with research protocols and safety requirements.
  • Write and present research/study status reports for review and use of the Principal Investigator.
  • Prepare results of experimental findings for presentation to colleagues and the sponsor; at professional/technical conferences; and/or, for publication in scientific journals.
 
Qualifications
 
  • PhD in a related field is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in scanning tunneling microscopy.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in molecular beam epitaxy.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of band structure and topology of quantum materials.
  • Good verbal and written skills, ability to effectively communicate with researchers and graduate assistants.
  • Excellent time and workload management skills.
  • Strong personal interaction skills.
  • Ability to present results, organize and maintain documentation as required.
  • Ability to apply advanced statistical concept.
