Essential Job Duties
This position will assist researchers in bioinformatics computing. This position includes bioinformatics pipeline development and optimization, software installation, database and website generation, and scientific analysis and visualization. Computing may occur at the NC State HPC core facility, Bioinformatics Research Center (BRC) computing resources, or external HPC facilities (supercomputing centers, cloud). As this position will work closely with research groups in the BRC, projects may include a range of data types, including Next-generating sequencing (NGS) and phenotypic data.
Research
This position will work with research groups to develop new bioinformatics pipelines and/or modify and extend existing pipelines by writing maintainable code. This position will maintain knowledge of workflow management software, virtual machines, and platforms like Docker or Apptainer (Singularity) and generate and maintain databases to house biological datasets as needed for research groups. This position will also contribute to generating reactive web apps using web frameworks such as Shiny and install scientific software on High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
This position will perform scientific analysis and visualization of modeled or measured datasets with popular visualization tools and engage with faculty regarding the testing, specifications, and acquisition of new hardware. This position will also maintain the software stack and documentation of the BRC cluster.
Training
This position will create and deliver custom training modules and workshops on various research computing topics focused on skills development for the next generation of researchers in graduate programs.
Budget
Will assist with developing budgets and proposals to access HPC resources.

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Proven knowledge of scripting programming languages like Shell, Python, and/or R
- Familiarity with job schedulers (ie SLURM, LSF) and job scheduling practices
- Experience working with Containers for Scientific Applications
- Comfortable using the Linux Operating System
- Ability to identify capabilities and limitations of local scientific computing resources, be able to connect researchers with appropriate external resources, and identify cases where the use of commercial cloud platforms may be applicable.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, collaborative environment with colleagues and build partnerships
- Strong communication and presentation skills, able to convey technical information in a clear and thorough manner
Preferred Qualifications
The following items are desirable, but not necessary for consideration for this position:
- Master’s degree or PhD in a Computational Biology/Bioinformatics related field
- Experience working in a higher education or research environment
- 3+ years of relevant professional experience
- Experience in GPU computing
- Experience with Github for software management
- Experience with the usage of workflow languages (like Nextflow) for developing and maintaining bioinformatics analysis pipelines
