Job Description

RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1, Aeronautics and Astronautics, to be responsible for theoretical/algorithmic development and real-world applied mathematics problem solving with minimal supervision; work in a highly collaborative environment with MIT faculty and students, as well as external collaborators from national laboratories and other universities; conduct fundamental research duties (70%); support students (10%); and sponsor engagement (10%) within  Prof. Richard Linares’ research group, which is part of the Space Systems Laboratory (SSL) in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT and includes Astrodynamics, Space Robotics, and Controls Laboratory (ARCLab), focused on astrodynamics, space situational awareness and space traffic management, satellite drag modeling, estimation and controls, reinforcement learning, and optimal control.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics; a minimum of two years of postdoctoral training; two years of experience as an academic researcher in astrodynamics and space systems; proficiency in satellite constellation theory space traffic management applications in mega satellite constellations; expertise in flower constellation theory, number theory, applied mathematics, and perturbation theory; a track record of methodological innovation and analysis in areas of expertise, supported by publications in leading international conferences and journals; solid passion for space exploration and space technologies; ability to motivate and supervise multiple people, including graduate students at the SM and Ph.D. levels, in a multi-disciplinary environment; solid organizational, time-management, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills; ability to interface with sponsors and excellent project management and organizational skills; and ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues using discretion.
