Commonwealth Theatre Center (CTC) is a regional non-profit arts organization focused on youth and community development through excellence in comprehensive theatre education and performance. CTC provides youth and adult theatre training through its world-renowned and award-winning Walden Theatre conservatory, as well as a diverse array of high-quality educational outreach programs reaching 55,000+ individuals each year through its Blue Apple Outreach. CTC's Conservatory program utilizes a holistic approach to theatre education with both classical and contemporary training where students gain acting, directing, and producing experience. CTC's Conservatory was the first youth conservatory in the world to complete Shakespeare's canon and continues to host an annual Young American Shakespeare Festival. CTC's Outreach programs are driven by data and best practices for how theatre can make a positive impact.
Beyond inspiring students to their own next level and helping them gain 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, initiative, creativity, and problem-solving, CTC's programs have a strong focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Aside from DEIB programming, CTC has a Connecting Cultures program aimed at bridging community divides, a Resiliency program helping students develop emotional literacy and mindfulness, and an IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Awareness Society) program focused on reimagining the collective theatre experience.
CTC engages in many community partnerships, including the Jefferson County Public School system, state agency schools, community organizations focused on diverse populations, local universities, and other arts organizations.

The Managing Director will serve as a dynamic and diplomatic leader for the 20 member staff, representing the organization both locally and nationally. This individual will work side-by-side with the Artistic Director to provide strategic and inspirational vision to strengthen CTC's sustainability and growth, while embracing the principles of inclusion and belonging, collaboration, and access. This is a dual structure organizational model, in which both the Artistic and Managing Director report directly to the Board of Directors. The Managing Director will work with staff, the board of directors, and corporate and civic partners in active pursuit of financial resources to support the strategic plan. This includes facilitating relationships with cultural partners, institutional funders, and individual donors. The Managing Director will be responsible for overseeing CTC's financial, operations, fundraising, marketing, human resources, and technology strategies. A visible leader, this individual will leverage organizational resources to expand partnerships and grow the vitality of the organization. Creating a team approach to the work with the Artistic Director is important. Together, the Managing Director and Artistic Director collaborate as partners to lead artists, staff, board, and the community in realizing CTC's mission.
The Managing Director of the Commonwealth Theatre Center will possess the following attributes and competencies:
Strategic Vision and Leadership
- Cultivate and nurture transparent and positive relationships with the staff, patrons, board, and other key stakeholders, ensuring open communication, collaborative team culture, and candid assessment of performance milestones.
- Lead administrative staff and work with artistic staff in implementing organizational priorities with customer-focused service, efficiency, and professionalism.
- Help establish equitable and effective decision-making processes that enable CTC to successfully achieve its strategic goals and objectives.
- Foster a culture of collaboration with the artistic team and within the community centered on the educational and transformative power of the arts.
- Embrace and conceptualize innovative ways to have a positive and uplifting impact on CTC and its partners.
- Cultivate with the Artistic Director, board of directors and staff an organizational culture and practice that seeks to identify and dismantle oppressions based on race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability and other historically oppressed groups
- Work with the Artistic Director and the Board to develop, update, maintain, and execute CTC's strategic plan in support of organization's mission, vision, and values.
- Work with Artistic Director to implement strategic plan goals; allocate financial and human resources to achieve strategic goals; assess progress toward meeting goals and objectives and report regularly to Board.
- Work to deepen CTC's commitment to racial and cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the organization's work.
- Act as primary staff liaison and support to the Board of Directors, including scheduling and providing resources and communications for board meetings and activities. Attend all meetings, including Committee meetings.
- Work with Artistic Director and Board to recruit and develop Board members who have the skills and experiences needed to support CTC's mission, and who reflect the diversity of our city.
- Oversee all facility and property-related issues.
- Ensure that the organization has the information, communications, and technology systems it needs to be effective.
- Coordinate and facilitate staff meetings and staff communications.
- Create and maintain effective and efficient operations by developing guidelines, policies, and practices, in coordination with the Artistic Director.
- Manage insurances, licenses, and all other regulatory compliance.
- Take a lead role in all personnel recruitment, training, and oversight ? including the development and implementation of personnel policies.
- Maintain knowledge of appropriate compensation rates and practices, and work with Artistic Director to set and negotiate employee salaries and benefits.
- Provide ongoing decision making and problem-solving expertise and assistance for a positive, collaborative, and productive working environment.
External / Advocacy
- Serve on community boards and committees as a representative of CTC, as appropriate.
- Work with Artistic Director and Director of Development to represent, lead, and advocate on behalf of CTC to external stakeholders, including serving as primary point-of-contact with local, state, and federal officials.
- Serve as a spokesperson for CTC when appropriate.
Development, Marketing and Communications
- Lead, develop, and manage Director of Development & Marketing, and Grants Manager.
- Oversee strategic planning, coordination, and execution of fundraising, including individual, government, corporate, and foundation giving, as well as fundraising events ? both on annual and special campaigns.
- Work with Board Development & Marketing Committee to engage funders, potential funders, and other stakeholders and to identify new marketing opportunities and strategies.
- Act as a key point-of-contact for many of the organization's prime development relationships.
- Work with Grants Manager and Director of Development & Marketing to develop grant strategy and execute grant proposals, budgeting, reports, and stewardship.
- Collaborate with staff and Board, as appropriate, to plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising and stakeholder events.
- Oversee all marketing and communications strategy and planning. Work in partnership with Director of Development & Marketing and Board to ensure marketing strategies are effective.
- Oversee and approve all major external communications, including website & social media accounts in collaboration with the Artistic Director.
- Foster positive relationships with the media in partnership with marketing and communications staff.
Financial and Office Management
- Lead, develop, and manage Business Manager and Office Manager.
- Oversee all financial decisions and monitor follow-through.
- Supervise all financial processes and activities of business administration team.
- Perform regular internal control oversight activities.
- Work with Artistic Director, senior staff, and Finance & Facilities Committee, to develop annual budget.
- Reforecast budget regularly to monitor and manage cash flow to meet organizational needs.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to guide Board's financial decisions.
- Prepare and provide financial reports to the Finance & Facilities Committee and to the full Board.
- Act as primary liaison to external auditors to assure that all financial systems and internal controls are appropriate and adequate.
- Act as primary legal signatory and financial representative of the organization.
- Provide general office and operating oversight.
