Board President / Chair Role

Job Description

Full job description

For Us, By Us PGH — Board President / Chair

About the Organization
For Us, By Us PGH is a grassroots nonprofit led by and for LGBTQ+ people. We’re building the kinds of spaces we’ve longed for — places of connection, healing, learning, and truth-telling. Through peer support, storytelling, LGBTQ+ education, and community-based mental health advocacy, we help LGBTQ+ people feel seen, held, and empowered — while working to transform the systems that care for us.

Our vision for LGBTQ+ healing is rooted in diagnosing and treating both external and internal barriers to wellness. While many organizations do vital external work — fighting legislation, supporting housing, organizing pride — we also center what happens inside: the internalized shame, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and grief we carry.

This is both external and internal work. Real liberation means healing inside and out. Internal healing + external action = a strong, resilient (but also tender and thriving) LGBTQ+ community. Less suffering, more love. That’s the dream.

Our work is inspired by lived experience, community collaboration, and the belief that healing isn’t linear — it’s layered, raw, and deeply human. We're learning as we go, building frameworks from grassroots mentorship, online training, and hands-on practice.

We are deeply committed to heart-led leadership, collective care, and community healing. Our core values are: Rooted in connection, Grounded in truth, Empowered by love, Led with bravery, and Held in vulnerability.

About the Role: Board President / Chair
The Board President serves as the governance lead and board chair, working closely with the Executive Director and fellow board members to guide For Us, By Us PGH’s vision, values, and strategic direction.

This is a hands-on, heart-forward leadership role — perfect for someone passionate about LGBTQ+ healing and community-building who is also ready to help co-create, problem-solve, and hold space for the messy, powerful, and transformational work of growing a grassroots nonprofit.

The President supports high-level decision-making, fosters board alignment, and serves as a public advocate for our mission. They are the Executive Director’s right-hand partner — helping ensure accountability, clarity, and momentum at every step.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly (at least weekly) with the Executive Director to collaborate on strategy, major decisions, and organizational direction
  • Lead the Board of Directors with care and clarity — shaping vision, building internal culture, and holding collective accountability
  • Serve as a thought partner and strategic support to the Executive Director — balancing encouragement, challenge, and critical thinking
  • Participate in decisions around program development, hiring, and long-term planning (always collaboratively)
  • Work closely with the Vice President and board to build strong internal systems, ethical practices, and operational excellence
  • Support fundraising by building relationships with donors, attending events, and helping generate the resources needed to sustain our work
  • Represent FUBU PGH publicly (media, events, panels) to amplify our mission and deepen community partnerships
  • Support governance growth by helping build structures for onboarding, accountability, and internal policy review

This is a volunteer position and does not receive financial compensation at this time.

What This Role Does Not Include

  • Directly supervising staff or managing day-to-day operations (that’s the Executive Director’s role)
  • Acting independently on major decisions — all big moves are made collaboratively with the ED and Board
  • Serving as a top-down leader — this is co-leadership, rooted in trust and shared vision

Qualifications

  • Prior nonprofit board, governance, leadership, or community organizing experience strongly preferred
  • Strong emotional intelligence, organizational skills, and people-centered leadership style
  • Comfort leading and participating in high-level conversations, including major decision-making and strategic planning
  • Public speaking, advocacy, or community-building experience (professional or lived)
  • Ability to balance vision, care, follow-through, and accountability in leadership
  • Willingness and ability to represent FUBU PGH publicly at events, panels, and community gatherings
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and collective healing, especially within LGBTQ+ spaces
  • Reliable access to a computer and internet for regular virtual meetings
  • Passion for grassroots, community-driven work — and a willingness to grow alongside the organization

If you’re someone who believes in leading with heart and integrity — and who’s ready to help co-create a nonprofit where healing and action meet — we’d love to hear from you.
