This position will be in support of infectious disease research at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Responsibilities
HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support infectious disease research at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. related to viral pathogenesis, antiviral immunity, and vaccine development. More specifically the research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of viral pathogenesis to delineate the correlates of disease and immunity using both in vivo and in vitro systems and using these correlates to test vaccine efficacy in animal models and human clinical trials. She/he will also be responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU.
Responsibilities
  • Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.
  • Performs laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols that will involve specialized procedures, such as isolation of cells, plasma, serum from blood and tissues collected during the course of infectious disease research, performing virology and immunology assays etc. Proficiency in laboratory procedures, cellular and molecular assays related to assessing infection and immunity preferred but not essential as necessary training will be provided. Projects will involve human and animal samples, cell culture, in vitro assays, etc.
  • Collects and processes infectious disease related samples and keeps detailed records of experiments.
  • Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals.
  • Assists other students and postdoctoral researchers with various assays and with training laboratory staff as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of laboratory areas.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Qualifications

Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree
  • Minimum of 0-5 years experience required.
