Position Summary

 

The Opportunity: The Dean of Advising and Student Success supports the work of Skagit Valley College to provide holistic support and retention services to all students. This position is part of the Student Services Leadership Team that works to advance the goals of student achievement and success. This role will directly oversee Academic Advising, and collaborate with all faculty and staff to identify and develop programs and support models to enhance student advising and retention services. This position is based on the Mount Vernon campus with some regular travel to the Whidbey Island Campus.

The Location: Skagit Valley College is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish People’s, especially on Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, Samish Indian Nation, Nooksack Indian Tribe, and Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe. Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Oversee SVC’s advising model to best support student progress and completion;

  • Directly supervise Counseling and Navigation (advising) teams, including hiring, training, and evaluation;

  • Collaborate closely with the Counseling Faculty Department Chair, regarding offering career guidance; college success skills and coping strategies; referral to external services and personal/crisis support.

  • Lead the implementation of Guided Pathways advising strategies in alignment with SVC’s Student Achievement Strategy, including support for Areas of Study cohorts, and student transitions to faculty advisors;

  • Collaborate regularly with Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Student Support Programs, Student Life, Workforce Grants, and Academic Affairs to facilitate smooth transitions from college entry to completion;

  • Design, implement, and manage comprehensive training opportunities in collaboration with Instruction to support instructional faculty in fulfilling academic advising loads and best practices;

  • Actively identify, lead, and implement strategies that promote equity, inclusion, and an anti-racist practices across departments;

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor assigned budgets;

  • Collaborate with Information Technology to support continued training on the use of TargetX and ctcLink for all advising and student data tracking purposes;

  • Help lead internal College retention efforts rooted in data tracking, analysis, advising interventions, and presentations to relevant stakeholders;

  • Participate actively in SVC leadership and committees including Student Services Leadership, Strategic Enrollment Management Council, Cabinet Plus, and more;

  • Oversee development and implementation of Career Fair, Transfer Fair, and Majors Fair in partnership with faculty counselors and navigation staff;

Knowledge or understanding of:
  • Successful record overseeing faculty and staff development and supervision.;
  • Knowledge of student development and advising theories;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with mental health support and intervention strategies:
  • Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
  • Knowledge of college admission, advising, registration, and financial aid policies and processes; Knowledge of educational programs including Basic Skills, developmental education, and academic and professional/technical certificates and degrees;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, or other relevant degree commensurate with the role;
  • Five (5) years of administrative responsibility as a director, manager, or department lead in a college unit supervising full-time, professional staff and/or faculty;
  • Five (5) years of higher education experience working with one or more of the following: appreciative academic advising, career and academic counseling, transfer articulation, student development, and retention, TRIO Student Support Services, or admissions/enrollment.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Education, or similar;
  • Five (5) or more years of administrative responsibility as a director, manager, or department lead in a college unit supervising full-time, professional staff;
  • Six (6) or more years of higher education experience working with one or more of the following: appreciative academic advising, career and academic counseling, transfer articulation, student development, and retention, TRIO Student Support Services, or admissions/enrollment;
  • Familiarity with the Guided Pathways model, theoretical framework, and research-based outcomes;
  • Experience leading student success initiatives in higher education;
  • Data analysis experience regarding retention of students.

 

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:

  • Annual salary rate for this twelve-month, 100% of the full-time position is $105,000-$110,000 depending on experience;
  • Contracts are written annually for the period of July 1 to June 30. This position will be filled as soon as practical after a candidate is identified and the salary will be pro-rated for the remaining contract period;
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act and is civil service exempt;
