External Research Collaborations (ExRC) is a part of a global Academic Partnerships and External Innovation team that enhances and accelerates on-going research programs and initiatives at Novartis Biomedical Research (BR) through the implementation of collaboration agreements to enable access to external research, materials, and expertise. External Research Collaborations works closely with external business functions from a variety of partners, including universities, commercial organizations and government agencies.
In the role of Associate Director, External Research Collaborations, you will be responsible for supporting these external engagements with limited oversight from the Global Head, ExRC.
The ExRC Associate Director is a member of a global team, and manages the external collaboration needs of Disease Areas /Functional Areas (DA/FA) based in La Jolla, CA and Emeryville, CA. You will work with science leaders and laboratory investigators at each site to assess how a relationship with an external party can best be structured to meet the needs of a particular scientific research project. The ExRC Associate Director must then balance and synthesize the priorities of each DA/FA to provide business guidance and manage the execution of all necessary agreements.

Your Key Responsibilities:
* Interaction with external business functions from external research partners such as universities, research hospitals, government labs and companies to represent Novartis BR as a partner of choice for research collaborations.
* Implementation and management of research collaborations and license agreements with minimal supervision.
* Implementation and management of Confidentiality Agreements, Consulting Agreements and Material Transfer Agreements to support internal research programs

Role Requirements

* BA degree required. MS/Ph.D. in Life Sciences or Chemistry preferred. Business degree a plus.
* Minimum 5+ years solid transaction experience required, working in both an academic technology transfer and Pharmaceutical/biotechnology settings is desirable.
* A genuine passion for science is required!
* Strong transaction experience to manage contract negotiation for collaboration agreements, licenses, material transfer agreements, strategic alliance agreements for research enabling technologies/platforms in a matrix organization (Corporate & Business Development, Legal, Patents and Finance) in support of Novartis Biomedical Research and Academic Partnerships and External Innovation strategy. Working knowledge of Intellectual property/ Patent law.
* Strong analytical and communication skills, with excellent skills in both prioritization and time management are required, and an ability to bring a creative approach to problem solving.
* Ability to multi-task and work in a matrix environment to integrate feedback from stakeholders and manage execution of all necessary agreements.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $174,400 - $261,600/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
