Course Description

This course covers key structural aspects of the human brain with an emphasis on function. We will make use of clinical case studies in small working groups to uncover how and why symptoms linked to neurological disorders exist. For these case studies, three-dimensional visualization tools and hands-on examination through dissections of postmortem brains will be used to highlight the elegant anatomical relationships of sensory, motor, emotional, and cognitive systems.

Responsibilities*

The GSI is expected to attend all lectures and hold weekly office hours and study sessions on an as-needed basis. The GSI is not expected to be as expert as the faculty but should be able to answer most student questions regarding the subject matter. The GSI is expected to generate quiz questions and work with the course instructor on exam questions, based on the content of lectures. The GSI is expected to proctor and grade all quizzes and exams. 

Beyond this, the GSI is expected to: (1) design goals for and execute weekly laboratory sessions in conjunction with course director (including a clinical case study to reinforce key concepts), (2) set up and put away all laboratory materials, (3) instruct students during laboratory to insure that they successfully accomplish goals and (4) develop, set up, clean up, and grade laboratory practical exams (likely two during the semester). 

NOTE: We anticipate two laboratory sessions per week in order to accommodate roughly half the class on a given day. This may be modified based on the method of delivery (e.g. hybrid, online, in person).

Required Qualifications*

Required prerequisite: successful completion of NS570 or similar graduate coursework in human neuroanatomy

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications*

Significant previous research experience in neuroscience

Preference will be given to highly qualified eligible Neuroscience graduate students, followed by other graduate students who are also qualified.
