Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 6:30 pm.
Occasional evenings and weekends will also be required.
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Position Summary:
To aid students in achieving educational, career, and personal goals through the use of the full range of institutional and community resources. To stimulate and support students in their quest for an enriched quality of life, reflecting the institution’s mission of holistic student development.
Functional Responsibilities:
To work with individual students and groups of students to (1) assess their educational status and interests; (2) help to determine appropriate academic and career goals; (3) identify and share programs and strategies to support development; (4) independently analyze and understand student issues to provide appropriate coaching, mentoring, and academic advisement that will ultimately lead to greater student persistence and retention; and (5) track and evaluate academic progress.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Demonstrated ability to interact and advise first year students of diverse backgrounds and needs in a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated ability to advise individuals in an educational setting with circumstances that may hinder academic success.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience in intrusive advising practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with student retention strategies and initiatives.
- Knowledge of and belief in the mission of a comprehensive community college, particularly as it relates to advising and student support services.
- Demonstrated understanding of student assessment, education and career planning, registration, and retention principles and practices.
- Demonstrated oral, written, group communication, and customer relations skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, analyze, and manage data.
- Demonstrated ability to promote collaboration and teamwork in a student-centered environment.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems using strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced student environment.
- Demonstrated skills in the use of contemporary computer application software to include word processing and spreadsheets, and other information technology applications such as those that manage college student information data.
- Experience working as an academic advisor.
