Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens. Our mission is to partner with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians.
Wilson County is located in eastern North Carolina with a population of 78,449. The county has a good mix of urban and rural farming communities. Agriculture provides a major economic impact to the county with farm income estimates of over $159 million in 2023. Wilson County is a hub of agricultural marketing centers and agribusiness. Wilson County was ranked by Farm Futures Magazine as the 9th best place to farm in the United States. The Wilson County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale has a long history and is recognized as one of the premier youth livestock programs in the state that has generated millions of dollars in income for the youth involved.
Wilson County is a great place to live. Within the county there is fishing, hiking, boating, great golf, antiquing and historic sites. Buckhorn Lake covers 2183 acres of water, 1850 acres of land and is host to many triathlons and boat racing events. The City of Wilson has a vibrant community, with its award-winning revitalized downtown, offers festivals, outdoor concerts, historic walking tours, and events for the whole family. Wilson is also known for its first class soccer and baseball facilities. Wilson is home to Barton College a fully accredited, four year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college and Wilson Community College provides a variety of educational programs and college transfer programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
This position demands a responsible and self-motivated individual with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in livestock production and 4-H livestock programming.
The Livestock Agent will:
—Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.
—Be a team player and support the total Extension program.
—Network with broad audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and the local Extension staff.
—Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program.
—Develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs.
—The Extension Agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of an effective livestock educational program to meet the needs of the county youth and adults.
—This position demands a responsible and self-motivated individual with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development.
—The Extension Agent will provide leadership to the Wilson County Livestock Association.
—This position will oversee a no-till grain drill with small seed attachment and portable cattle handling equipment that are available for farmers.
—The position will also include responsibilities in forages, pesticide coordinator, and forestry management.
When providing references please include at least three of which two must be a current supervisor or former supervisor.
Frequent travel within the county and occasional travel outside the county is required.

Responsibilities for 4-H youth livestock programming will include: Wilson County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale, Chic Chain, Eastern Carolina Showmanship Circuit, Wilson County Fair Livestock shows, Wilson County 4-H Livestock judging team and be involved with youth on livestock projects at the regional, state and national level.

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Department Required Skills
A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or a related agricultural field is required.
