The Executive Director (ED) is a visionary leader committed to animal welfare with proven experience in general operations and development of strategic plans that successfully align the fiscal health of the organization with the evolving needs of animals and people. As an organizational leader, the ED will work diligently with managers and the board of directors to provide administrative oversight of general operations. This includes, but is not limited to, cost-effective and humane operation of the shelter, fiscal management, strategic planning, community outreach and fundraising, and leading affirmative staff and volunteer recruitment and retention. This leadership role is responsible for managing a $1 million annual budget, managing a diverse staff, maintaining a positive work culture, steering community outreach and development growth, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders including donors, animal welfare colleagues, the board of directors, and other community constituents.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the organization's strategic planning and operational initiatives to enhance animal welfare.
  • Oversee business development and project management efforts to ensure effective resource allocation including fiscal management.
  • Implement process improvements and operational management strategies to optimize performance.
  • Cultivate a strong leadership culture that promotes teamwork and drives organizational goals and success.
  • Support communication and development to maintain and create connections between the organization and donors and/or foundations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (business administration, non-profit leadership, human resources, finance, Public Relations), advanced degree preferred;
  • 3+ years of experience in leadership and/or management role (preferably in a non-profit environment);
  • Direct knowledge and experience overseeing complex budgets, generating revenue streams, and limiting costs;
  • Experience overseeing the nonprofit status of organizations including filing annual 990s;
  • Team leadership experience with the ability to inspire staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and the board of directors;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to make informed decisions that support the success and mission of the organization;
  • Passion for animal welfare and commitment to mission-driven work.

Homeward Bound is Addison County Vermont’s only humane society prioritizing the human-animal bond through a variety of impactful shelter and health initiatives focused on the safety and wellbeing of animals in need. In 2024, Homeward Bound served more than 2,100 animals through adoptions, spay/neuter programs, and community programs. We are excited to begin the search for the next Executive Director who will lead us forward.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
